Growing up I’m sure you always heard “lather, rinse, repeat” over and over and treated it as the golden rule of hygiene. Don’t get us wrong, cleanliness is important and we are huge proponents of a great smelling well taken care of beard… but washing your beard is different than your head hair. In this article, we’ll walk you through the dos and don’ts of beard washing, help save you from mistakes we’ve made along the way, and recommend the right products for you and your beard.

Use the right soap.

Using regular shampoo on your beard is one of the worst things you can do for your chin masterpiece. Regular shampoo often contains harsh foaming agents that will strip your beard of it’s natural and highly necessary oils. Your beard creates and holds onto these oils in an effort to keep it hydrated and healthy. In addition to your beard hair losing its oils, the skin on your face is much different than the skin on your scalp. Using a beard soap that is packed full of natural oils and other hydrating ingredients will guard you against beard related problems like beard dandruff, beard itch, and more. Don't wash TOO often.

Washing your beard doesn’t always have to involve soap and it definitely doesn’t have to take place every single day. Using the right soap, as the Bossman soap, will allow you to be able to wash your beard more often than a shampoo would, but we’d still recommend only washing your beard a maximum of once per day. In place of a full soap involved beard wash, run water through your beard and work out some of the grease and grime that could have built up after a workout or day out in the sun. To recap, “Lather, rinse, repeat” definitely doesn’t apply to those chin hairs and no… three-in-one shampoo, conditioner, and body wash shouldn’t make its way up to your beard.

Take your time.

After a nice haircut you’ll usually get one of those shampoos that will leave you questioning the way you’ve been washing your hair your entire life. We recommend doing the exact same thing when you wash your beard. Take your time, working the soap deep into the beard, and give it the attention it deserves. Not only will a nice deep clean help pull out the dirt and grime that’s built up over the course of the day, but that added attention to the face with the hands will help increase blood flow. That’s right. Washing your beard and working products like jelly beard oil into your beard will stimulate beard growth via added blood flow to the face. Wash your beard. Grow a bigger beard.

If you’re even reading this article - and have made it this far - it's clear that you already do or are looking to take your beard hygiene seriously. With these steps, you’re better equipped to go back into the world, collect some dirt and sweat in your beard, and then properly remove it before your head hits the pillow or you meet that girl for your first date. Just remember to use the right products that we’ve spent countless hours perfecting at Bossman Brands and you’ll be well on your way to having a cleaner, healthier, and better-smelling beard.
